The aroma of a proudly loaded kota may draw the crowd, but behind every toasted slice of bread, generous filling and irresistible bite lies a much bigger story, one of culture, creativity, entrepreneurship and opportunity.

That story took centre stage at the Kota Festival Conference, hosted at the Market Photo Workshop Auditorium in Newtown, bringing the spotlight onto the people, businesses and ideas helping transform the humble township favourite into a powerful cultural and economic platform.
And if there is one thing a kota crowd understands, it is that there is no such thing as too much flavour.

The festival has grown beyond a celebration of food. It is creating space for Kotapreneurs, township food entrepreneurs who are turning passion, recipes and street-side hustle into businesses with ambition.
With Albany playing an important role in the festival ecosystem, the conversation also connects food culture with meaningful support for township enterprises. Through Tiger Brands’ broader entrepreneurship initiatives, including the Kokota Growth Programme, food-service SMMEs have been exposed to training, equipment and opportunities designed to strengthen their businesses.

But the kota experience is not complete without the culture surrounding it.

COME FOR THE KOTA – BRING YOUR SOCCER STYLE
The festival’s spirit calls for personality, pride and plenty of colour. For those attending, the suggested fashion mood is simple:
Wear ANY SOCCER T-shirt.
Whether it is your favourite local club, an international football giant, a national-team jersey or simply the sports shirt you love most, bring that football energy.
Because in township culture, food and football have always shared the same table, passionate debates, big personalities, friendly rivalry and a hunger for victory.
And just like the kota, there is room for everybody.

FROM STREET FOOD TO SERIOUS BUSINESS
The bigger question emerging from the conference is whether South Africa can fully recognise the economic power already sitting inside its townships.
The answer increasingly appears to be yes.
The Kota Festival platform is deliberately creating opportunities for small businesses to connect with customers, networks and potential partners, while celebrating a uniquely South African food culture.
The upcoming Jozi Kota Festival, scheduled for 3 October 2026 at the Johannesburg Expo Centre in Nasrec, promises to bring that energy together on an even bigger stage.
For vendors, it is an opportunity to sell.
For entrepreneurs, it is an opportunity to grow.

For brands, it is an opportunity to connect.
For families and food lovers, it is simply an invitation to come hungry.
And for township culture, it is another chance to prove that what begins on the street can travel far beyond it.
The kota may be served from a small shop, corner stall or humble kitchen, but the dream behind it can be enormous.

From bread to business, flavour to fashion, soccer to culture, the Kota Festival is serving a reminder that township creativity is not waiting for permission to grow.
It is already cooking.
