City Power is continuing the rollout of its Free Basic Electricity (FBE) programme across Johannesburg, with recent registration drives held in Regions A, C, and F. The initiative, which runs until 31 July 2025, is aimed at supporting low-income households by offering 50kWh of free electricity each month.

This week, the registration drive reached Region F, where Shell House on Plein Street in the Johannesburg CBD served as the registration point. Residents from Ward 59 and neighbouring areas turned out to register and learn more about the benefits of the programme.

City Power officials were on-site to assist with the registration process and provide clarity on the required documents. These engagements form part of City Power’s broader efforts to improve access to basic electricity services and promote legal and safe usage.

Ward 59 Councillor Sithembiso Hlatswayo, who attended the activation, encouraged qualifying residents to register. “We are here with City Power to assist households with a monthly income below R7,503.01,” he said. “Applicants must bring their ID, proof of residence, and income verification.”

Residents who missed the event can still register by visiting any of City Power’s Service Delivery Centres or by accessing and downloading the registration form from the City Power website www.citypower.co.za.

In addition to receiving 50kWh of free electricity, qualifying beneficiaries are also exempt from paying the monthly R70 service charge and R130 network capacity charge, a total of R200. This ensures continued relief for the most vulnerable customers, especially in the current economic climate.

City Power remains committed to reaching all seven regions by the end of July and urges all eligible residents to register before the 31 July deadline.
