LEGENDS TURN ON THE STYLE IN TOYOTA CUP CURTAIN RAISER

Table of Content

With a squint of the eyes, fans could almost feel like they had travelled back in time as they watched some of their heroes of yesteryear lacing up their boots and turning on the style once again, as they were treated to a highly entertaining 1-1 draw between the Kaizer Chiefs Legends and the Zulu Kingdom Legends as an appetiser for the Exciting Toyota Cup clash between Kaizer Chiefs and Ghanaian giants, Asante Kotoko. The match featured some of South Africa’s foremost former stars, including the likes of Doctor Khumalo, Reneilwe Letsholonyane, Cyril Nzama, Jabu Mahlangu and Siphiwe Shabalala turning out for Amakhosi against players such as Japhet Zwane, Phumlani Mkhize, Delron Buckley, Bryce Moon and Sibusiso Zuma.

Despite a touch of added weight and a marginal decrease in speed and agility, the legends showed that they had not lost any of the skills that thrilled fans for decades in times gone by.

The Zulu Legends took a lead into halftime, after Moon scored from a defence-splitting pass from Buckley in the 13th minute. Amakhosi did have a goal disallowed for offside Chiefs, however, dominated the second 30-minute half and were awarded a penalty six minutes into the second half when Shabba was adjudged to have been fouled by Siyanda Zwane, but unfortunately, David Radebe pushed his spot-kick wide of Zulu Legends substitute goalkeeper, Thokozani Ndlovu’s post. Ndlovu was in imperious form, pulling off crucial saves to thwart Thuso Phala, Shabalala, Dladla and Letsholonyane, who also struck the crossbar. The Glamour Boys drew level in the final minute of normal time from a second penalty – after a foul on Mahlangu – This time consummately converted by Nzama, followed by his trademark celebration, which drew the biggest cheer from the stands.
