In the spirit of honoring the legacy of Nelson Mandela, Infrastructure Development and Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) MEC Jacob Mamabolo led a major clean-up operation in the Gauteng Government Precinct in Johannesburg’s Central Business District (CBD) on 18 July 2025.

The MEC was joined by City of Johannesburg Ward 123 Councillor Norman Mmbengwa and the newly established Department of Infrastructure Development’s Multi-Disciplinary Infrastructure A-Team. This team of professionals, known for spearheading impactful service delivery interventions, previously led a successful cleanup operation in Emfuleni Local Municipality earlier this year. This time, their efforts focused on Johannesburg, the seat of provincial government, home to leading financial institutions, and a vibrant hub of arts and culture.

Hundreds of volunteers and government officials participated in the campaign, working side by side to restore the CBD’s cleanliness and dignity. The cleanup formed part of the ongoing “CBD Revitalization Fridays” initiative, which seeks to transform and rejuvenate the inner city. According to MEC Mamabolo, the Mandela Day campaign will extend over three weeks, targeting areas most in need of urgent attention.

“Your contribution matters. Make a difference, make an impact—go out there and contribute to changing our country. Let us join hands, work together, and make Tata Nelson Mandela proud by preserving his legacy,” said Mamabolo.

Mandela Day, observed annually on 18 July, is a global call to action to honor the values and principles of former President Nelson Mandela. The day encourages individuals, communities, and organizations to contribute to meaningful change and to shine a light on the legacy of a man who transformed the 20th century and helped shape the 21st.
