FNB’s flagship Pop Opera concert in partnership with the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra, returned in spectacular style under a starlit Ballito on Sunday 17 August, leaving audiences spellbound with its 2025 theme, “Echoes of Greatness.”

The evening was a breathtaking celebration of African sound, tracing its journey from grassroot beginnings to global stages. Backed by the world-class KZN Philharmonic Orchestra, an extraordinary line-up of some of South Africa’s most celebrated artists delivered unforgettable performances honouring the country’s musical heritage and inspiring the next generation of talent.

“True to our grassroots to greatness sponsorship strategy, this year’s FNB Pop Opera was about honouring our musical giants while amplifying the emerging voices shaping the future of African music. The energy, the artistry, and the connection between the performers and audience made this year’s concert truly unforgettable,” says FNB’s Brand Experience Lead, Nkosana Matyeshana.

One of the evening’s most moving moments came with a special tribute to Mam’ Abigail Kubheka, whose legendary contribution to music was honoured through a powerful live rendition of her most loved works.

Hosted by Claire Mawisa, this year’s performers Included: Abigail Kubheka, Ihashi Elimhlophe, Belinda Davids, Moneoa, J’Something, Sethabile Hlabangane, Magdeline Minnar, Katlego Maboe, Kearsney Boys Choir, and the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Chad Hendricks alongside guest conductor Ofentse Pitse.

The event’s impact extended beyond the music, reinforcing FNB Pop Opera’s mission to not only entertain, but also to unite KZN communities and celebrate the transformative power of the arts.

“KwaZulu-Natal remains one of South Africa’s key economic hubs and a vibrant centre of creativity,” said Matyeshana. “This musical experience was not only a celebration of the region’s rich artistic talent, but also a powerful contribution to the local creative economy. By blending pop classics, contemporary sounds, and opera, we showcased the passion, diversity, and community spirit that define KZN’s cultural heartbeat.”

Testament to the enduring power of music to inspire, connect, and uplift, FNB Pop Opera continues to cement its place as a cultural highlight in KwaZulu-Natal’s cultural and creative calendar.
