CITY OF JOBURG BRINGS STABILITY TO 296 RIVERSIDE FAMILIES

The City of Johannesburg’s Department of Human Settlements, in partnership with the Gauteng Provincial Department, has allocated 296 beneficiaries at Riverside View, part of government’s commitment to provide dignified housing to qualifying citizens.

The event was attended by MMC for Human Settlements Cllr Mlungisi Mabaso; Gauteng MEC for Human Settlements Tasneem Motara; ward councillors Cllr Rufus Maswazi and Cllr Julius Maake; and Member of Parliament Kgomotso Ramolobeng.

“We are here to liberate you from hardship. Human Settlements is not only about houses but about bringing clinics, schools and shops closer to communities,” said Mabaso.

With this latest allocation, the number of beneficiaries housed at Riverside View—a high-rise sectional title development—rises to 4 436 since its launch in 2017. Beneficiaries include the elderly, people with disabilities, youth, and former backyard dwellers from Peter Dube and Thabo Mbeki informal settlements in Region A.

For many, the handover brought relief and joy. Seventy-one-year-old John Raphadu, who had lived as a backyard dweller in Diepsloot since 1992, said the new home was beyond his dreams.

Dorah Chwene (63), who had lived in a shack for more than 20 years, said: “My furniture was ruined by rain, but now my daughter and I finally have a permanent place we can call home.”

MEC Motara thanked residents for their patience and urged them to honour their sectional title responsibilities by registering body corporates and contributing to maintenance to preserve the development’s quality.
