SMART WAYS TO SAVE MOBILE DATA AND STRETCH YOUR BUDGET

Even as mobile data prices drop across South Africa, many consumers still find their bundles running out too fast. Our growing need for streaming, remote work, and social media means data is used up quicker than ever. The good news? You can still stay connected and entertained while using far less.

TCL Mobile shares practical ways to make every megabyte count — helping you save money without cutting corners on your digital life.

Start by knowing your numbers
The first rule of saving data is understanding how you use it. On most Android phones, open Settings → Network and Internet → Internet → Settings (next to your operator) to view your total usage. Once you know what’s eating your data, it’s easier to take control.

Switch to Wi-Fi whenever you can
Connecting to Wi-Fi at home, work, or your favourite coffee shop instantly reduces data use. But always stay alert when using public hotspots — avoid sensitive tasks like online banking unless the connection is secure.

Stream smarter — download first
Apps like Netflix, Spotify and YouTube can quickly drain your data. Download your favourite shows, songs or podcasts while on Wi-Fi and enjoy them offline later. Google Maps also lets you save routes and areas for offline navigation — perfect for travelling without extra costs.

Control background data and updates
Cloud apps such as Google Photos or Dropbox often upload large files automatically. Set them to sync only over Wi-Fi. The same goes for app updates — switch Play Store settings to “update on Wi-Fi only” to stop data-hungry downloads.

Choose lower streaming quality
If you can’t avoid streaming on mobile data, reduce quality settings in apps like Netflix, TikTok or YouTube. Lower video resolution or audio quality can save gigabytes over time without spoiling your experience.

Try lite versions of apps
Lightweight “Go” or “Lite” apps, such as Facebook Lite or Google Go, are built to use less data and power. They run smoothly even on older phones, giving you speed and savings.

Turn off auto-play videos
Many social media platforms automatically play videos as you scroll. Disabling this setting is one of the simplest ways to stop silent data drain.

Why it matters
With mobile data still a daily cost for most South Africans, small changes can add up to big monthly savings. Managing your data smartly not only stretches your budget but also keeps you online for what truly matters — connection, creativity and communication.
