The City of Johannesburg’s Department of Community Development, through its Library and Information Services, in partnership with the Library and Information Association of SA, hosted the second annual South African Digital Literacy Day at the Brixton Multipurpose Hall in Mayfair West on Thursday, 23 October 2025.

The vibrant event brought together pupils, parents, community members, and key stakeholders who explored a variety of interactive presentations and activities. Sessions on coding, artificial intelligence, cyberbullying, cybercrime, and new-age digital skills kept the audience engaged and inspired.

MMC for Community Development Cllr Tebogo Nkokou commended all participants and stakeholders for their commitment to digital learning. “As we celebrate this milestone in our country’s digital journey, we must continue to equip ourselves with the skills needed to thrive in a technology-driven world. I am encouraged by today’s enthusiasm and hope everyone leaves here feeling more empowered.”

Endorsed by UNESCO, Digital Literacy Day forms part of Global Media and Information Literacy Week, which this year focused on the theme “Minds Over AI – MIL in Digital Spaces”. The theme underscores the growing connection between media literacy and artificial intelligence, encouraging communities to think critically about the digital content they consume.

This year’s local theme, “Libraries Providing Access to Digital Tools and Building Safer Digital Communities”, highlighted the crucial role libraries play in bridging the digital divide and promoting safe, informed online engagement.

Reflecting on her experience, Mankgapele Ramoshaba, an e-learning participant from Phiri Library in Soweto, said: “Today I learnt so much about navigating the online space — its benefits, its risks, and how technology can be used to change the world.”
