Bafana Bafana Survive Zimbabwe Test to Book AFCON Knockout Spot
Bafana Bafana showed courage and composure as they defeated Zimbabwe 3-2 in a thrilling final Group B match at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Marrakech, sealing their place in the Round of 16.

South Africa started brightly and were rewarded early. In the 7th minute, Tshepang Moremi struck a low effort that took a deflection on its way into the net, giving Bafana a vital lead.
Zimbabwe responded with confidence and energy. Their pressure paid off when Tawanda Maswanhise produced a fine finish to level the score, keeping the contest wide open and intense.

After half-time, Bafana regained control. Lyle Foster rose well to score in the 50th minute, restoring South Africa’s advantage and lifting belief within the camp.
The match took another twist late in the second half. Zimbabwe equalised once more when a dangerous ball into the box ricocheted off Aubrey Modiba and crossed the line, making it 2-2 and setting up a tense finale.

The decisive moment arrived in the 82nd minute. Following a VAR review, the referee awarded South Africa a penalty for handball. Oswin Appollis stepped forward and calmly converted from the spot, sending the Bafana bench into celebration.
Zimbabwe pushed hard in the closing stages, but South Africa remained disciplined and held firm until the final whistle.

The victory sees Bafana Bafana finish second in Group B and advance to the knockout phase, while Zimbabwe exit the tournament. It was a dramatic night that highlighted both South Africa’s attacking strength and the resilience required to succeed at AFCON.
