Mamelodi Sundowns continued their relentless push for the Betway Premiership title with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Lamontville Golden Arrows in a tense encounter on Wednesday night at Loftus Versfeld.

With the championship race heating up, Sundowns entered the match knowing that every point matters. The Brazilians showed their intent early, controlling possession and dictating the tempo.

Midfield general Teboho Mokoena broke the deadlock in the first half with a powerful strike that gave the hosts the advantage and lifted the energy inside the stadium. Shortly after the break, forward Iqraam Rayners doubled the lead with a sharp finish, putting Sundowns firmly in control.

But this was never going to be an easy night. Golden Arrows, guided by coach Manqoba Mngqithi, arrived with a clear sense of vengeance and determination. The visitors fought bravely, pressing forward with belief and refusing to surrender.

Their persistence paid off late in the game when Arrows pulled one back from the penalty spot, raising hopes of a dramatic upset and setting up a nervy finish for the home side.

Despite the pressure in the closing minutes, Sundowns held their ground and protected their lead.

The victory keeps Sundowns firmly in title-chasing mode, maintaining momentum at the top end of the table. Yet Arrows’ spirited fight, driven by Mngqithi’s determined approach, showed that even the champions can be pushed to the limit.
