TANA MALINGA

At the fifth Basadi in Music Awards, one of South Africa’s most influential women will be celebrated not simply for the stages she has conquered, but for the doors she has opened.
Some careers are built on longevity. Others are defined by reinvention.
Then there is Bonang Matheba.
For more than two decades, she has occupied some of the most coveted spaces in African entertainment, moving effortlessly between television, radio, fashion, business and luxury while transforming her name into a brand with ambitions far beyond South Africa.
Now, that journey is set to receive one of its most significant acknowledgements.
Bonang will be honoured with the 2026 Trailblazer Award at the fifth annual Basadi in Music Awards, taking place on Saturday, 8 August 2026, at the Joburg Theatre.
Under the theme REWIND, and with the campaign Africa to the World, the award arrives as a fitting tribute to a woman whose career has, in many ways, mirrored the evolution of modern African entertainment.
The Trailblazer Award recognises individuals whose vision, courage and innovation have not only transformed their industries, but created possibilities for those who follow.
Bonang’s influence makes her a natural recipient.
FROM BROADCASTING STAR TO CULTURAL POWERHOUSE
Long before the luxury campaigns, international red carpets and entrepreneurial ventures, there was a young broadcaster steadily making her presence impossible to ignore.
From her early television breakthrough on LIVE, later Live Amp, to her influential radio years on YFM and Metro FM, Bonang developed a distinctive broadcasting identity built around confidence, personality and an unmistakable command of the room.
Her résumé subsequently expanded to some of the continent’s biggest entertainment platforms.
She has hosted major editions of the South African Music Awards, Metro FM Music Awards, MTV Africa Music Awards, Miss South Africa, Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards and the BET Awards International Red Carpet, while also featuring in landmark productions such as Global Citizen: Mandela 100.
But broadcasting was never going to be the final destination.
Bonang understood early that influence could be transformed into ownership.
THE BUSINESS OF BEING BONANG
Her evolution from entertainer to entrepreneur has become one of the defining chapters of her career.
She became the founder of House of BNG, executive producer and star of the award-winning reality series Being Bonang, and author of the bestselling From A to B.
More significantly, she built a lifestyle identity that placed African luxury, ambition and sophistication at the centre of the conversation.
For Bonang, the goal has never appeared to be simply to occupy a seat at the table.
It has been to build another table.
Speaking about the honour, Bonang reflected on the significance of being recognised by an organisation dedicated to celebrating women.
“An award like this means so much because it’s not just recognition, it’s affirmation.”
She also connected the recognition to the bigger purpose behind her entrepreneurial journey, including House of BNG and the Bonang Matheba Foundation.
Her ambition remains firmly international.
With House of BNG already expanding beyond South Africa, Bonang says she wants to see the brand standing confidently on the world stage — presenting African luxury as world-class, distinctive and impossible to overlook.
A LEGACY BEYOND THE SPOTLIGHT
For Hloni Modise Matau, Founder and CEO of the Basadi in Music Awards, Bonang represents precisely what the Trailblazer Award was created to honour.
“Some people succeed within an industry. Bonang Matheba transformed it,” she said.
Matau believes Bonang’s greatest contribution extends beyond her personal achievements.
It lies in the confidence she has instilled in a generation of African women to pursue bigger ambitions and occupy spaces previously considered unattainable.
That sentiment is echoed by the organisations helping stage this year’s celebration.
Dichaba Phalatse, Head of Video Entertainment at SABC2, described Bonang as a broadcaster, storyteller and cultural ambassador whose influence extends far beyond television.
For Xoliswa Nduneni-Ngema, CEO of Joburg City Theatres, Bonang’s career has become part of South Africa’s broader cultural story — a story of ambition, resilience and possibility.
Manaileng Maphike, Managing Director of Maphike Inc., Legal Partner of the Basadi in Music Awards and Advisory Board member, similarly sees Bonang as someone who has strengthened the industries she has entered by challenging convention and creating opportunities for others.
AFRICA TO THE WORLD
There is a deeper symbolism to Bonang receiving the award during the Basadi in Music Awards’ fifth anniversary.
The event has built its identity around celebrating women whose creative contributions continue to shape African music and entertainment.
Bonang’s journey fits naturally into that narrative.
Her influence can be measured in television ratings, radio audiences, international stages and business ventures. But perhaps her most enduring impact is less tangible: the young African women who have watched her career and understood that ambition does not have to come with an apology.
That is the essence of a trailblazer.
Not simply being first.
But making it easier for others to follow.
As the Basadi in Music Awards prepares to celebrate its fifth year, the 2026 ceremony promises a polished showcase of African talent, featuring major performances, prestigious honours, collaborations and moments designed to place women at the centre of the continent’s entertainment story.
And at its heart will be a woman who has spent more than 20 years turning visibility into influence, influence into ownership, and ownership into legacy.
Bonang Matheba is no longer simply part of the African entertainment story. She has become one of its authors.
