A legend’s journey from the pitch to technical leadership brings fresh expectations, renewed passion and hope for the future of the beautiful game.
South African football supporters have reason to celebrate as the legendary Dr Doctor Khumalo steps into a new chapter of his football journey, having been appointed vice-chairperson of the South African Football Association’s (SAFA) Technical Committee.
The appointment, announced following the association’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Sandton on 18 October 2026, places the former Bafana Bafana and Kaizer Chiefs midfield maestro alongside committee chairperson Jack Maluleke in a leadership structure responsible for important technical matters affecting South African football. For a football-loving nation hungry for progress, this appointment carries more than the significance of another administrative position. It represents an opportunity to draw on the experience, knowledge and footballing passion of one of the country’s most recognisable legends.
Khumalo’s legacy was written on the pitch, most notably during South Africa’s historic triumph at the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations. His subsequent involvement in coaching and technical roles has also exposed him to the demands of football beyond the playing field.

His new responsibilities include contributing to technical discussions involving coaching, football development and national-team performance. The challenge now is to translate experience into meaningful progress, stronger development structures and renewed confidence in South African football. With SAFA’s Vision 2030 providing a broader framework for development, supporters will be watching closely to see how technical leadership can help nurture emerging talent, strengthen coaching standards and build a sustainable pathway for future generations.
Congratulations, to Doctor Khumalo! His appointment is a proud moment for those who have followed his journey and celebrated his contribution to the game.
From the stands to the streets, supporters will be hoping that his new role brings wisdom, dedication, accountability and a winning mentality to the technical development of South African football.
May this chapter inspire young players to dream bigger, coaches to strive for excellence and administrators to place the future of the game first. The nation wishes you strength, vision and success as you take on this responsibility. May the passion that made you a football legend now help inspire the next generation of South African football heroes.
