City of Joburg Speaker of Council, Cllr Margaret Arnolds calls on society to reflect on crimes against the vulnerable in society following the arrest and court appearance of Ms Tiffany Meek – charged with the murder of her son, 11-year-old Jayden-Lee Meek.
This tragic case, now further illuminated by disturbing revelations, exposes the horrific abuse suffered by Jayden-Lee at the hands of those who were meant to love, protect, and nurture him.
In her statement, Cllr. Arnolds is urging all South Africans to confront the uncomfortable truth that the most dangerous places for children are increasingly their own homes. “We must be our brother’s and sister’s keepers,” she emphasised, pointing to the broader crisis of violence not only against women, but against children and the elderly. This is a scourge that continues to devastate families across the country.
The Speaker reinforces longstanding calls from civil society and faith-based organisations for the justice system to evolve. She advocates for legal amendments that would allow third parties, particularly relatives, neighbours, or friends to report and press charges in suspected abuse cases, even when the victims themselves are unable or too afraid to do so.
Drawing attention to the upcoming International Nelson Mandela Day on 18 July, Cllr Arnolds reflects on Mandela’s words from 1995: “There can be no keener revelation of a society’s soul than the way in which it treats its children.”
“As a nation, we are failing our children,” she said. “If we were more intentional in our vigilance, more committed to looking out for one another, perhaps Jayden’s death could have been prevented. Perhaps Joshlin would still be with us.”
