Pikitup bolsters fleet to boost recycling and service delivery

Table of Content

Pikitup has added 41 new caged trucks to its fleet to enhance the collection of recyclable waste in areas where its Separation at Source programme is in effect across the City of Johannesburg.

This expansion underscores the entity’s ongoing commitment to reducing the volume of waste sent to landfill sites, in line with the Waste Management Act. It also supports efforts to preserve limited airspace at the City’s four remaining landfill sites.

Introduced in 2018, the Separation at Source programme initially targeted select high-income areas with the aim of diverting recyclable waste from landfills. The initiative supports long-term national targets that require municipalities to recycle 97% of waste and landfill only 3% by 2050.

The new fleet complements other initiatives, such as converting garden sites into Integrated Waste Management Facilities that accept multiple waste streams. Pikitup currently operates 41 such facilities across all seven regions of the city.

In addition, Pikitup has secured six new compactor trucks and purchased a further 12, supplementing the six acquired last financial year. These vehicles are expected to significantly improve operational efficiencies and reduce breakdowns, ensuring that weekly waste collection services run on schedule.
