The City of Johannesburg is celebrating the resounding success of the 2025 African Bank Soweto Marathon, affectionately known as The People’s Race. Once again, the event showcased Soweto as one of South Africa’s most iconic sporting and cultural destinations.

This year’s marathon attracted an impressive 18,000 runners — placing it firmly alongside major national races such as the Comrades Marathon. Athletes from across South Africa, the continent and abroad, including entrants from France, Lesotho, Zambia and Kenya, filled Soweto’s historic streets with energy and excitement.

Executive Mayor of Johannesburg Cllr Dada Morero highlighted the marathon’s deep significance. “The marathon is an important event for Johannesburg and for Soweto, which has a rich history in South Africa’s struggle for liberation. Its continued growth signals global confidence in Soweto’s capacity and infrastructure to host major events.”

He reaffirmed the City’s commitment to strengthening its long-term partnership with the marathon.

This year’s race began under challenging conditions, with early rain giving way to mist and cloud. Showers returned around 6:30am before clearing as runners crossed the finish line. Despite the weather, participants pressed on with remarkable determination — a testament to the resilience that has made the Soweto Marathon one of the country’s most beloved sporting events.

Behind the scenes, seamless coordination between the Community Development Department, Sports and Recreation Directorate, Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department, Emergency Medical Services and various City entities ensured a safe, well-organised event. Sponsors also played a vital role in supporting the successful delivery of the race.

The Deputy President, Paul Mashatile, awarded medals to the top three male and female finishers. MMC for Group Corporate and Shared Services Cllr Sithembiso Zungu joined him on stage to present bouquets and congratulate the athletes.

The City extends its gratitude to all sponsors, organisers, runners, volunteers and residents who made the 2025 People’s Race a success.
