The City of Johannesburg, in partnership with the taxi industry through the South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) and the Johannesburg Gauteng National Taxi Alliance (JGNTA), has taken 80 taxi administrative operators through a development and training programme at the Wits School of Governance.

This initiative is designed to uplift the skills and capabilities of the operators, fostering improved service delivery within the taxi sector.

The training and capacity development programme aims to empower the taxi industry with vital skills and knowledge. Key focus areas include corporate governance specific to the transport sector, conflict resolution and management, as well as foundational principles in economics and financial management.

On Friday, 23 May 2026, 23 taxi operators will graduate and receive their certificates at the Wits School of Governance. This follows the successful graduation of 22 operators in 2024, with a final cohort of 35 operators expected to graduate in December 2026, marking the completion of the programme for all 80 participants.

Transport MMC, Cllr Kenny Kunene, applauded the initiative, saying: “Our taxi operators are the backbone of Johannesburg’s public transport system. By equipping them with essential governance and management skills, we are not only professionalising the industry but also enhancing commuter safety and service delivery. This programme is a vital step towards transforming the taxi sector for the better.”

The City of Johannesburg calls on the graduates to apply the knowledge and skills acquired through this programme to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of public transport services, ultimately benefiting all commuters.
