SAMA nominated Afro soul vocalist and practising medical doctor Dr Smama has joined forces with Mafikizolo vocalist Nhlanhla Mafu for their new single Isifiso Sami, releasing on Friday 4 September 2026. In an era where modern romance is increasingly defined by transactional dating apps and fleeting digital interactions, the duo has anchored this track in the raw, nostalgic strings of traditional Maskandi guitar. This unexpected sonic pairing delivers a soulful Zulu love song that directly challenges how modern South African relationships are soundtracked.

The release marks a significant departure for both artists and serves as a major career milestone. For Dr Smama, a songwriter who has built his career crafting hits for South African music royalty including Berita, Nokwazi, and the late Lundi Tyamara, Isifiso Sami represents the first time he has recorded a song written by an outside composer.

“If you only sing your own songs, you stay inside your comfort zone,” says Dr Smama. “When this track found its way to me, the Maskandi feel grabbed me immediately. It forced me out of my usual gospel soul space and challenged me vocally to step into someone else’s story. It is not just a song about romance; it presents love as an intentional, vulnerable choice to stand by someone despite outside noise.”

The collaboration also brings a personal friendship spanning twenty years to the recording studio for the very first time. Having met early in their respective careers, Dr Smama and Nhlanhla Mafu deliberately resisted rushing into a corporate feature, waiting instead for a composition that subverted audience expectations of the traditional Mafikizolo sound.

“We have been friends for over two decades, so working together was always inevitable, but we wanted something that felt distinct and honest,” explains Nhlanhla Mafu. “When I heard Isifiso Sami, I was sold instantly. You simply do not hear people express devotion or declare love like this anymore. It captures a depth of lyricism and traditional storytelling that our industry has slowly been losing to quick digital trends.”

By placing the acoustic weight of Maskandi inside a contemporary Afro soul architecture, Isifiso Sami serves as a case study in how South African legacy sounds can be repurposed to speak to modern emotional anxieties. The result is a song that bridges generational listening habits, proving that traditional African storytelling remains a potent anchor for contemporary music culture. Isifiso Sami drops across all major digital streaming platforms on Friday 4 September 2026.
