History was made when HRH Gogo Esther Mnguni, the legendary Ndebele artist and cultural icon, became the first artist to paint on top of the tallest building in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The historic world record attempt took place at ALTO234 at The Leonardo in Sandton, high above the city skyline. It marked a powerful moment where African tradition met modern architecture, turning Africa’s tallest building into a living canvas. The official world record title was revealed during the event.

At 84 years old, Gogo Esther Mnguni once again proved that age is no barrier to greatness. Her climb to the top and her act of painting symbolised resilience, legacy, and the rise of African culture to global recognition.

Organisers said the moment was more than a record. It stood as a celebration of African excellence, indigenous knowledge, and the enduring strength of art passed from one generation to the next.

A specially created art sneaker, painted as part of this historic moment, was also unveiled. The unique piece of wearable art will be set for auction, with the auction date, country, and venue to be officially announced.

The event attracted strong national and international attention, drawing cultural leaders, creatives, and heritage supporters. It sent a clear message to the world,
African history does not stay on the ground ,it rises, it climbs and it claims its place at the very top.
