Isuzu D-Max 1.9 vs 3.0: Which Diesel Makes the Most Sense for Your Budget?

Johannesburg, South Africa, 21 October 2026- With diesel prices putting extra strain on household budgets, South African bakkie buyers are facing a familiar dilemma: should you opt for the more affordable Isuzu D-Max 1.9-litre turbodiesel, or stretch for the extra power of the 3.0-litre? For many city-based families, the 1.9-litre strikes a practical balance between upfront cost, fuel efficiency, and day-to-day usability.

The D-Max is still one of South Africa’s top-selling bakkies. The 1.9 Ddi produces 110 kW and 350 Nm, while the 3.0 Ddi delivers 140 kW and 450 Nm. Both are offered in double-cab guise, but the price and running-cost gap is hard to ignore.

“The choice between the 1.9 and 3.0-litre D-Max comes down to how the bakkie will actually be used,” said Alan Quinn, Chief Innovation and Product Officer at Cars.co.za. “For buyers who spend most of their time in town and seldom tow, the 1.9 Ddi’s lower purchase price and better fuel economy make a very persuasive case. But for those who regularly tow or travel long distances fully loaded, the 3.0-litre’s extra torque and performance remain worth paying for.”

The 1.9 Ddi: Prioritising efficiency

The 1.9-litre turbodiesel targets buyers who use their bakkie for the daily commute, school drop-offs, and the odd road trip. Isuzu claims 7.3 L/100 km in the X-Rider 4×2 automatic trim, meaning you could theoretically cover just over 1 000 km on a single 76-litre tank.

Priced from R690 810, the 1.9 Ddi X-Rider 4×2 automatic is a strong contender for those who don’t often tow or haul heavy loads.

The 3.0 Ddi: For heavier lifting

If you regularly tow, travel long distances with a full load, or want extra confidence when overtaking, the 3.0-litre Ddi is the obvious pick. The extra 30 kW and 100 Nm do come at a price, though: Isuzu claims 7.9 L/100 km, which drops the theoretical range to about 960 km.

The 3.0 Ddi X-Rider 4×2 automatic starts at R792 470, which is R101 660 more than the 1.9-litre version.

Which one should you buy?

For families who spend most of their time in the city and seldom tow, the 1.9 Ddi is the clear value pick. The R100 000 you save upfront could cover about 40 tanks of diesel, more than a year’s worth of typical driving.

If you often tow a caravan, trailer, or boat, or need extra muscle for fully loaded trips, the 3.0 Ddi’s added performance makes the higher price and running costs worth it.
