JOBURG LAUNCHES SA’S FIRST INTEGRATED SPATIAL DATA PLANNING SYSTEM

Table of Content

The City of Johannesburg has launched South Africa’s first Integrated Spatial Data Platform (ISDP) and Spatial Plan Management System (SPMS), marking a significant step towards modernising spatial planning and improving service delivery.

For the first time, spatial data from all City departments and municipal-owned entities will be consolidated into a single digital repository, accessible through a user-friendly web-based mapping platform. This innovation replaces outdated, fragmented systems with real-time, seamless data sharing across the City.

The ISDP allows both GIS and non-GIS users to:

Conduct advanced spatial analysis
Generate interactive, dynamic reports
Apply data-driven insights for planning and decision-making

“These platforms are more than just data tools—they’re enablers of smarter governance and improved service delivery. By embracing innovation, the City is taking a bold step in its Smart City journey,” said MMC for Development Planning, Cllr Eunice Mgcina.

The project reflects strong collaboration between Development Planning, Corporate Geo-Informatics, and the Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA).

“The ISDP is not just a technological milestone—it’s proof of what City partnerships can achieve in shaping Johannesburg’s future,” said Themba Mathibe, CEO of the JDA.

The SPMS further enhances transparency by making spatial plans accessible online, enabling greater public participation.

“The SPMS invites citizens to actively engage with spatial planning processes,” said Eric Raboshakga, Executive Director: Development Planning.

Together, these platforms lay the foundation for an inclusive, transparent, and digitally connected Johannesburg.
