Lil-Lets is deepening its commitment to breaking the cycle of stigma and shame around menstruation with the launch of Masana the Brave: A story about growing up, an illustrated book designed to help children navigate one of life’s most important milestones.

Aimed at children aged 8 to 13, the book introduces young readers to the realities of growing up, including first periods, body changes and emotional development, in a way that is honest, age-appropriate and deeply relatable. Importantly, the story speaks not only to girls, but also to boys, helping to foster understanding, empathy and open conversation from an early age.

At the heart of the story is Masana, a young girl navigating the uncertainty and curiosity that comes with change. Through storytelling, the book tackles myths, taboos and misinformation, replacing them with clarity, confidence and a sense of normalcy.

The launch builds on Lil-Lets’ long-standing Cyclebreakers platform, which challenges outdated narratives and equips the next generation with the knowledge and language to speak openly about menstrual health.

Written by Puno Selesho, who previously contributed to Lil-Lets’ award-winning Be You. Period. campaign, and illustrated by Gabby Correia, Masana the Brave combines cultural relevance with emotional storytelling to create a meaningful connection with young readers.

“For many young people, especially girls, the first experience of menstruation can be confusing or even frightening,” says Keryn Brien, Marketing Executive at Premier FMCG. “This book is about changing that narrative. Through storytelling, we can normalise these conversations, break down stigma and give children the confidence to understand what’s happening to their bodies.”

Extending its impact beyond the page, Lil-Lets has introduced a pay-it-forward mechanism where every book purchased results in a copy being donated to a girl in need, ensuring access to essential education reaches communities where it is needed most.

Masana the Brave: A story about growing up is available at Exclusive Books stores nationwide and online for only R200 a copy.

Because understanding your body should never come with fear or shame.

Only confidence.

Endorsement by the Department of Basic Education:

“Masana the Brave is a warm, affirming story that normalises menstruation and equips learners with the language and confidence to navigate puberty without shame. Its authentic South African voice reflects the Gender Transformative Education principles of the DBE, breaking the silence around menstrual health, promoting sanitary dignity and fostering supportive school communities. Within the collaborative partnership framework between the DBE and Premier FMCG through its brand, Lil-Lets, the Department proudly presents this resource for learners nationwide.”
