Chanee ‘the right person to guide department at this crucial time’ – MEC Chiloane

Gauteng’s MEC for Education, Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Matome Chiloane, has hailed the appointment of seasoned public servant and long-serving Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) senior manager, Albert Chanee, as the GDE’s acting Head of Department (AHoD), saying the move came at a ‘crucial time’ for the department.

“Chanee’s proven track record and dedication to learners makes him the right person to guide the department at this crucial time,” MEC Chiloane said while addressing GDE staff at the Hollard Building Atrium on Wednesday 13 August 2025.

Chanee is no stranger to acting in the position of Head of Department, having previously been at the helm of the Department of Economic Development and the GDE.

The new acting HoD is a well-known figure within the GDE and in the education circles. Over the years, he has served in several senior roles, leading innovative projects and strengthening service delivery across the province.

Chanee shared his vision for the road ahead: “Our focus will remain on ensuring every child in Gauteng has access to quality education, supported by strong systems, dedicated teachers and safe learning environments.”

As he steps into this role, Chanee will work closely with teams across the department to keep building an innovative education system that ensures that every learner feels valued and inspired, every day.
