Residents of Sydenham and surrounding areas can now enjoy a transformed, safer and more vibrant Hoy Park, thanks to a recent upgrade by the Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) in partnership with Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ).

Whether you are looking for a space to exercise, play, relax or simply take a stroll with family, the revamped Hoy Park has something for everyone. The upgrade means more than just new facilities — it’s about improved quality of life, access to safe recreation, and a stronger sense of community right on your doorstep.

What’s new at Hoy Park:

  • New soccer field with floodlights for evening games
  • Multipurpose sports courts for basketball, netball or five-a-side
  • Safe, paved walkways with proper lighting
  • Upgraded toilets and ablution blocks
  • Grandstand seating for spectators
  • New fencing around play and sports areas
  • Improved landscaping and more green space to enjoy

This project was shaped by the community — residents were invited to share their ideas and feedback throughout the planning process. The result is a public space that reflects what locals truly want and need.

“Hoy Park is a shining example of how we can work collaboratively to shape public spaces that foster unity, promote healthy lifestyles, and offer safe, accessible recreational opportunities for all,” said Themba Mathibe, the CEO of the JDA.

“By investing in parks and green infrastructure, we are investing in the social and environmental fabric of our city,” he added.

The park upgrade is part of the City of Johannesburg’s wider goal to create inclusive, well-designed spaces that support healthy, happy communities.

Grab your takkies, ball or picnic basket — your new favourite park is open and ready.
