Senior citizens from wards 62 and 63 gathered at the Johannesburg Zoo on Wednesday, 04 March 2026, for a joyful Picnic in the Park event organised by the City of Johannesburg’s Citizen Relationship and Urban Management (CRUM) Region F, in collaboration with the Social Development and Sport & Recreation departments, as well as external stakeholders.
The picnic created an opportunity for seniors to socialise, connect with peers, enjoy nature, and explore the zoo’s attractions. Attendees toured the zoo, viewed various animals, and participated in a range of fun and engaging activities designed to promote active ageing and overall wellbeing.
In her welcoming remarks, Ward 62 Councillor Zanele Nyembe encouraged attendees to embrace the moment. “This day is for you to relax and enjoy. We have activities planned which you will enjoy very much. We want you to forget about your problems for a while and simply enjoy the moment.”
Meshack Maluleke, Regional Manager of Social Development in Region F, reminded seniors about the support services available to them.
“We are glad to host you today and want to remind you about the services available for senior citizens in the city. We know that many seniors in areas such as Hillbrow reside in flats and pay rent. The Expanded Social Package Programme is available to assist you, and you may qualify for rebates. “Please visit any Customer Care Centre to apply,” he said.
Maluleke further emphasised the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. “Nutrition is essential for healthy and long lives. It is equally important to remain active, participate in excursions, and join social clubs to stay engaged. Today, social workers from your areas are present; please do not hesitate to contact them when needed.”
The programme featured presentations from several stakeholders, including the Social Development Department, South African Police Service (SAPS), the Sport & Recreation Department, Dotted O Foundation, and other partners.
Seniors enthusiastically participated in games such as tug of war, swing ball, ring the stick, and morabaraba. Refreshments, including tea, sandwiches, fresh fruit, water, and juice, were served throughout the day.
One of the attendees, Rose Mphuti from Ward 63, expressed her appreciation for the initiative.
“It is difficult for us to take part in activities in our ward as there is limited space. We live in flats, and some parks are occupied by homeless individuals, making it unsafe and hard for us to move around. We appreciate the efforts of our councillor and the City for organising such events,” she said.
