Tomorrow 14 November is World Diabetes Day, and Servier Laboratories South Africa urges South Africans to “Own Your Number” and take control of their health.

South Africa faces a growing health challenge, with more than 4.2 million people now living with diabetes, the highest prevalence in Africa, according to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) from their 2023 report.

Globally, diabetes has reached epidemic proportions. The World Health Organisation (WHO) reports that over 800 million people were living with diabetes in 2022, a number projected to exceed 1.3 billion by 2050.
Locally, thousands of South Africans remain undiagnosed, while many more are at risk due to poor nutrition, inactivity, and limited access to healthcare.

IDF’s global theme, “Diabetes and the Workplace,” highlights how the disease affects working-age adults, impacting quality of life, productivity, and overall economic well-being.

Diabetes has become a silent pandemic according to Virosha Deonarain, medical manager at Servier Laboratories South Africa.

“We’re seeing more young adults, and even teenagers, being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.”
Virosha said early detection and consistent management are key to preventing serious, long-term complications.

In response, Servier Laboratories South Africa has launched the “Own Your Number” campaign.

This initiative encourages South Africans to learn their blood sugar levels, understand their risks, and take small, sustainable steps toward better health.

The campaign moves away from fear-based messaging and instead focuses on empowerment, showing that manageable, everyday actions can make a significant difference.

“Own Your Number” puts the control in the patient’s hands by personifying the campaign to resonate with everyday people and their habits in the workplace and at home, through a digital campaign and screenings, so patients are equipped to take control of their numbers.

As part of this commitment, Servier is working with pharmacies and medical practices nationwide to offer free diabetes screenings, educational talks, and patient materials to promote awareness, encourage lifestyle changes, and support treatment adherence.
