If there is one place where a Kota stops being just a sandwich and becomes a full-blown celebration, it is Soweto and this September, the township is preparing to serve it hot, loaded and with plenty of attitude.

The Soweto Kota Festival returns to the Elkah Cricket Oval in Rockville on 5 and 6 September 2026, promising two mouth-watering days of food, music, culture, entrepreneurship and unapologetic township flavour.

Now entering its ninth edition, the festival has grown into one of Soweto’s signature lifestyle and cultural attractions, consistently drawing thousands of hungry food lovers and entertainment seekers. And this year, the recipe has been upgraded.

THE KOTA IS COMING AND IT IS LOADED
Forget the ordinary sandwich. The traditional Kota, once built around humble ingredients such as mince, mashed potatoes and atchar, has evolved into a township masterpiece packed with chips, cheese, polony and a variety of meats.
In 2026, around 40 vendors are expected to bring their own secret combinations, competing not only for hungry customers but for bragging rights over who can create the ultimate Kota.

Prices are expected to start from just R60, making the festival an affordable feast for families, friends and food fanatics.
And if the Kota does not satisfy the sweet tooth, Ola will be on hand to keep dessert lovers and children smiling, while drinks and refreshments will keep the festival crowd fuelled throughout the weekend.

FROM A TOWNSHIP SANDWICH TO A MOVEMENT
But behind the melted cheese, crispy chips and generous fillings is a much bigger story.
Founder Sidwell Tshingilane has turned the Kota into more than food. He has built a platform where small businesses can trade, young people can find temporary employment and township entrepreneurs can put their products directly in front of thousands of consumers.

The festival employs more than 40 unemployed young people from Soweto on the event days, helping create income and support families.

That is the real flavour of the Kota Festival, entrepreneurship served alongside culture.
“We grew up eating Kota at schools,” says Tshingilane, reflecting on a food that has become deeply woven into township life.
Today, that humble meal has become a powerful economic and cultural vehicle.

16 000 PEOPLE CANNOT BE WRONG
The numbers tell their own delicious story.
The eighth edition attracted more than 16,000 people, with approximately 9,000 attending on Saturday and another 7,000 on Sunday.

Since its beginnings, the festival has grown from around 15,000 visitors in 2019 to a record 18,000 people during its fifth edition, firmly establishing the event as one of the major dates on Soweto’s cultural calendar.
And it is not only about filling stomachs.
The festival creates opportunities for vendors, emerging entrepreneurs, performers and local businesses while giving brands an authentic platform to connect with the Soweto community.

THEN ADD MUSIC TO THE MENU

Of course, no great Kota feast would be complete without a soundtrack.
The 2026 festival promises two days of live entertainment, with performances from artists including Lamiez Holworthy, Tracy, Mr X, Uncool and Jobe London, among others.

The formula is simple: good food, great music, big crowds and unmistakable Soweto energy.

Whether you come for the Kota, the music, the culture or simply the atmosphere, there will be something waiting for you.

A FESTIVAL WITH BIG BACKING
The growing strength of the festival is reflected in its impressive list of partners.
Among those supporting the 2026 edition are Aromat, Renault, Super Store Dlamini, GoTyme Bank, Standard Bank, PayShap, First Choice Cheese and Big Tree Beverages, alongside strategic media partners Sowetan, Soweto TV and Jozi FM.
Super Store Dlamini will supply meat, while Big Tree Beverages will help keep the crowds refreshed.

The festival is also moving towards a predominantly cashless experience, with PayPal supporting the cashless system, while only a limited portion of transactions will accommodate cash.

Renault is also helping keep the festival’s organisers moving as one of the event’s sponsors.
And there is already another major feast waiting on the horizon.
Sasko, which supported the festival at its inauguration, is expected to return for the 10th anniversary celebration in 2027 — a milestone organisers promise will be bigger and better.

MORE THAN FOOD, THIS IS SOWETO ON A PLATE
The Soweto Kota Festival has become a celebration of what happens when food, culture, community and business sit at the same table.
It tells the story of a township dish that has travelled from schoolyards and neighbourhood kitchens into a major festival attracting thousands of people.

It gives vendors a platform.
It gives young people an opportunity.
It gives brands a direct connection with communities.
And most importantly, it gives Soweto another reason to celebrate itself.

Tshingilane says the festival would not be possible without the sponsors, partners, team members, vendors and supporters who continue to believe in its vision.
As the festival prepares for its ninth serving, one thing is already clear:
Soweto is setting the table and everyone is invited.

On 5 and 6 September, the Elkah Cricket Oval will become a giant township kitchen, concert stage and cultural playground.

Come hungry.
Come curious.
Come ready for music.

But above all, come ready to meet the Kota that keeps Soweto coming back for more.
