The City of Johannesburg has learned with great concern of the injury sustained by Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) Director, Director Fortuin, while carrying out his official duties in service of the residents of our city.
Director Fortuin was injured during a law enforcement operation aimed at addressing by-law contraventions and crime-related activities. In pursuit of suspects who attempted to evade arrest, he sustained a serious leg injury that will require urgent surgery and an extensive recovery period.
JMPD Chief o Police , Commissioner Themba Patrick Jaca said:
“Director Fortuin’s injury is a stark reminder of the realities our officers face every day in the execution of their duties. His willingness to pursue suspects and personally lead operations on the ground reflects the dedication, bravery and commitment that define his service to the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department and the residents of our city. Director Fortuin has always led from the front, setting an example through action rather than words. While we are deeply saddened by this incident, we remain inspired by his courage and determination. On behalf of the entire JMPD family, I wish him a successful surgery, a full recovery and strength during the road ahead. We stand united in our support and look forward to welcoming him back to duty as he continues his mission of making Johannesburg a safer city for all.”
On behalf of the leadership of the City of Johannesburg and all City employees, we wish to extend our heartfelt wishes for a successful surgery and a full and speedy recovery. Our thoughts and prayers are with Director Fortuin and his family during this difficult time.
City Manager, Dr Floyd Brink, said:
“Director Fortuin’s injury is a sobering reminder of the dangers our law enforcement officers face in the line of duty. Every day, they put themselves at risk to protect our residents, uphold the law and create safer communities. What stands out most to me is that, despite the seriousness of his injury, Director Fortuin remains focused on the mission and on serving the people of Johannesburg. That speaks volumes about his character, his courage and his unwavering commitment to public service. We are grateful for his leadership, we are proud of his dedication, and we stand firmly behind him as he begins his recovery.”
This unfortunate incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks and sacrifices our law enforcement officers make every day to keep our communities safe. While many residents go about their daily lives, dedicated public servants such as Director Fortuin place themselves in harm’s way to uphold the law, combat crime, and protect the people of Johannesburg.
Director Fortuin has consistently demonstrated an unwavering commitment to enforcing the law and ensuring that residents can live, work and move about our city safely. His actions today are a reflection of the hands-on leadership, courage and sense of duty that have characterised his service to the people of Johannesburg. Rather than directing operations from a distance, he was on the ground, leading from the front and standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the officers tasked with keeping our communities safe.
We are immensely grateful for his service, courage and leadership. At this time, we encourage him to focus on his recovery, secure in the knowledge that the men and women of the JMPD will continue the important work he has championed.
The City stands firmly behind Director Fortuin and wishes him strength, healing and a swift return to full health. Johannesburg looks forward to seeing him back where he belongs serving the residents of this city with the passion, commitment and determination for which he is known.
