Telkom proudly reaffirmed its commitment to advancing women in sport at the prestigious 20th Annual gsport Awards, held on Saturday, 30 August 2025, in Johannesburg. As the sponsor of the Telkom Woman of the Year category, we extend heartfelt congratulations to Akhona Poswayo, a trailblazer in rugby and sport management whose tireless work continues to elevate women’s rugby both on and off the field.

This milestone event marked two decades of recognising women who are reshaping the sporting landscape, bringing together athletes, administrators, and visionaries under the powerful theme of empowerment and visibility.

Akhona Poswayo’s leadership at the Golden Lions Women’s Team has created pathways for young women in stadium management, unlocked new sponsorship opportunities, and strengthened visibility for the women’s game.

Reflecting on the honour, Akhona said, “It is an honour and a privilege. Seeing the work Telkom has been doing in uplifting and making sure that women’s sport is recognised is amazing. To have such a big organisation supporting women and creating opportunities for us is inspiring.”

She added that while much of her work takes place behind the scenes, knowing that she is making a difference is deeply rewarding. She hopes to encourage other women and serve as a role model and mentor for those who need it.

Telkom’s sponsorship of the Telkom Woman of the Year category underscores its enduring commitment to empowering women, driving transformation, and ensuring that Possible Begins Here for the next generation of sporting leaders.

“For us at Telkom, supporting women’s sport is about creating lasting impact that begins at grassroots and extends to the highest levels of competition. The gsport Awards are a powerful showcase of the progress made in recognising women who are shaping the future of sport. We are proud to walk alongside these changemakers through this award category, and to celebrate individuals like Akhona Poswayo whose work embodies resilience, leadership, and inspiration. At Telkom, we believe that the power of possibility begins when women are given the platform to shine, and the results thereof transform communities, industries, and the nation as a whole,” said Gugu Mthembu, Telkom Chief Marketing Officer.

Guided by its purpose, Telkom remains committed to turning possibilities into reality for all South Africans. “Through initiatives like the gsport Awards, we continue to champion gender equality in sport, creating opportunities for women to lead, inspire, and thrive, on and off the field,” concluded Gugu.
