BLACK LABEL CUP SHOCK AS SUNDOWNS SENT PACKING EARLY

Mamelodi Sundowns’ journey in the Carling Black Label Knockout came to a sudden stop on Saturday when they were bundled out by Marumo Gallants in a tense penalty shootout.

The game had no goals across 90 minutes and extra time, showing how tight the contest was. Both teams created openings, but their final touches let them down. For Sundowns, the weight of expectations was heavy, as coach Miguel Cardoso had declared before the game that they were “obliged to win.” That pressure seemed to follow the players onto the pitch.

When the match went into penalties, nerves took over. Gallants showed calmness under pressure and edged Sundowns 7-6 in the shootout. The result sent Sundowns crashing out far earlier than many predicted. It was a blow for a team that has invested heavily and is known for its dominance in domestic competitions.

Cardoso is now under more scrutiny as fans and pundits question the team’s cup performances. Despite their league success, Sundowns often struggle in sudden-death cup moments, and this loss highlighted that weakness again.

On the other side, Gallants deserved their victory. Though labeled underdogs, they remained disciplined, stuck to their plan, and stayed mentally sharp when it mattered most. Their resilience proved that in knockout football, heart and composure can sometimes defeat star power.

For Sundowns, the night ended with disappointment and questions. For Gallants, it was a celebration of belief and determination.
