Mayoral candidates to face the public on food insecurity and the right
to food in South Africa.

JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA ,
The Union Against Hunger (UAH) invites members of the media to attend and cover the
Johannesburg Mayoral Town Hall on Ending Hunger, bringing mayoral candidates face-
to-face with residents and communities demanding concrete answers on how they will tackle hunger and food insecurity in the city. With the City of Johannesburg’s Food Resilience Policy indicating that 30.9% of the city’s population experiences food insecurity, the question facing political leaders is urgent: What will you do to ensure that every person in Johannesburg can access sufficient, affordable
and nutritious food?

For thousands of households, hunger is not an abstract policy concern. It is the daily reality of rising food costs, difficult choices between essential needs, and children and families struggling to secure nutritious meals. The Town Hall will provide a public platform for mayoral candidates to outline their plans to address these challenges, implement the City’s Food Resilience Policy and advance the constitutional right to access sufficient food and basic nutrition.

Taking place three days before World Food Day, the event seeks to put hunger firmly on the
local political agenda and ensure that food security is treated as a matter of public
accountability – not simply a campaign promise.
Organised by the UAH, a broad coalition of civil society organisations, trade unions, academics
and community movements, the Town Hall will create space for direct engagement between
political representatives and the people most affected by hunger. It will provide an opportunity
for journalists to hear candidates’ commitments, capture community concerns and examine

what meaningful action to end hunger in Johannesburg should look like.
