The City of Johannesburg’s Department of Health and Social Development, led by Member of Mayoral Committee (MMC) Cllr Ennie Makhafola, successfully hosted the 7th annual White Cane Safety Day Awareness event at Phiri Hall, Soweto.

This year’s event was held under the theme “Vision Beyond Sight: Celebrating Independence, Resilience and Achievement”. The celebration highlighted the white cane as more than a mobility tool, it stands as a symbol of freedom, and empowerment for blind and partially sighted individuals.

The City’s commitment to creating an inclusive society where persons with disabilities are not only recognised but fully supported to participate equally in community life, was admired. The City stands by the fact that blind and visually impaired residents are not limited by their disability and should be integrated into the fabric of society, whether it be education, employment or economic development.

The event further acknowledged the long-standing partnership between the City of Johannesburg and Blind SA, which has now reached its 10-year milestone. Blind SA, with its nationwide footprint of 52 branches, showcased its extensive work in empowering visually impaired persons. These include mobility training to help individuals regain independence in daily tasks, Braille services for accessible information, economic empowerment programmes for employment and business opportunities, as well as advocacy initiatives addressing social challenges affecting the disabled.

The organisation also highlighted its groundbreaking local manufacturing of white canes, a significant step towards reducing reliance on imported devices while creating employment opportunities for blind artisans. This initiative reinforces the message that visually impaired individuals are capable contributors to the economy.

Residents expressed that events like White Cane Safety Day offer a profound sense of belonging and recognition. For many, this commemoration represents the City’s commitment to listening, understanding and responding to the needs of people living with disabilities.

The City of Johannesburg remains dedicated to promoting accessibility, raising awareness and building a society where all residents, regardless of ability, feel valued and included.
