Joburg Property Company (JPC) Acting CEO Musah Makhunga has welcomed the recognition of the company as one of South Africa’s top gender-empowered outfits. The accolade comes from Topco Media in partnership with Standard Bank.

Makhunga expressed pride in the award, saying it reflects the company’s ongoing commitment to gender transformation in the workplace. “We are proud to be recognised as a top gender-empowered organisation,” said Makhunga.

“This is reflected in our employment equity efforts, where we have worked intentionally to create opportunities for women—particularly in leadership and technical roles that are traditionally male-dominated.”

The Top Gender Empowered Companies campaign, endorsed by the Commission for Gender Equality, United Nations Women, and Standard Bank Top Women, is South Africa’s leading gender empowerment initiative. It celebrates organisations—both public and private—that prioritise gender empowerment as a core part of their business strategies.

Speaking at the handover ceremony in Braampark on Wednesday, 23 July 2025, Topco Media’s Charlton Mouton commended JPC’s efforts in advancing women’s empowerment. “I’m here to hand over the certificate to the CEO and certify them as a top gender-empowered company.”

Mouton explained the rigorous evaluation process, stating: “Every year, we research companies based on their gender empowerment statistics, looking at their top management structures, company policies, and programmes geared towards women’s empowerment. If a company meets the criteria—developed in partnership with the University of Cape Town—they are eligible for certification.”

After months of thorough research and benchmarking, Topco’s analysts concluded that JPC met the stringent criteria required to be recognised as one of South Africa’s top gender-empowered companies.

Makhunga added that the company’s succession planning also prioritises young women, ensuring the next generation of female leaders is nurtured and prepared.
“We have implemented various training initiatives to build a pipeline of female talent—from entry-level to executive management,” he said.

“These include property-related courses at institutions such as the University of Johannesburg and Wits, which have equipped our female staff—including project and property managers—with the technical skills needed to excel in this sector.”
