Healthcare is changing, and for millions of South Africans, the question is no longer simply whether they have healthcare cover, but whether that cover will truly be there when they need it most. That reality is placing affordability, accessibility and meaningful protection firmly at the centre of the healthcare conversation.

Against this backdrop, NetcarePlus has unveiled its expanded 2027 offering, with an approach that could signal a more needs-driven future for private healthcare funding: start with the healthcare need, rather than simply starting with the product.
The announcement was made at the annual NetcarePlus Product Launch in Sandton on 9 September, where the organisation presented an expanded portfolio designed to give individuals, families and employers greater choice in navigating an increasingly complex healthcare environment.
And the need for that choice is becoming increasingly evident.Only 14.6% of South Africans are currently covered by a medical scheme, leaving millions of income-earning households outside traditional medical scheme protection.

Even those who do have medical scheme cover can face another challenge, unexpected financial exposure.
NetcarePlus analysis indicates that average out-of-pocket healthcare expenditure per beneficiary has tripled over the past 11 years, rising at more than twice the rate of CPI over the same period. For ordinary families, that can turn an unexpected diagnosis, procedure, specialist consultation or medical emergency into a financial crisis.

From healthcare anxiety to greater protection. This is where NetcarePlus believes a different conversation needs to begin.Rather than presenting healthcare funding as a simple choice between comprehensive medical scheme cover and no cover at all, the organisation is positioning its expanded offering around the different gaps people may encounter throughout their healthcare journey.

“The question for us is not simply what product we can offer. It is where people remain exposed when they need healthcare and how we can build cover around those needs,” says Teshlin Akaloo, Managing Director of NetcarePlus.
It is a philosophy that places the patient, rather than the policy at the heart of the conversation.

As healthcare becomes increasingly shaped by ageing populations, chronic diseases, technological advancement, artificial intelligence and more personalised care, consumers are also demanding solutions that better reflect their individual circumstances.More choice. More protection. More confidence. For 2027, NetcarePlus has broadened its portfolio with a range of additional benefits designed to respond to different healthcare and financial pressures.
The expanded offering includes Cancer Cover and Funeral Cover, as well as a Scheme-Excluded Procedures benefit, providing additional financial protection for certain procedures not funded by a member’s medical scheme.

NetcarePlus GapCare has also been strengthened, bringing expanded mental-health support, a new optical repair benefit and contraceptive cover.

Meanwhile, the PrimaryCare offering has been enhanced with additional everyday healthcare access, including nurse-led and virtual consultations, flu vaccinations and specialist consultations on selected options.
For employers and financial advisers, the wider portfolio opens the door to greater flexibility in structuring healthcare protection around workforce needs, participation models and available budgets.
Building cover from inside healthcare
Perhaps one of NetcarePlus’s strongest selling points is its position within the broader Netcare Group.

The organisation says this gives it an opportunity to draw insights from the healthcare environment itself, from healthcare utilisation and costs to the experiences of patients moving through the Netcare ecosystem and feedback from advisers and clients.“We see healthcare not simply as a claim or a transaction, but as a journey,” says Akaloo. That distinction matters.

Healthcare rarely begins and ends with a doctor’s consultation. It can involve diagnosis, treatment, medication, specialist care, mental wellbeing, rehabilitation, family support and, sometimes, significant financial consequences.Understanding that journey could help create healthcare cover that responds to people when they are most vulnerable.A future built around choice.

NetcarePlus is already reporting significant momentum, recording a compound annual growth rate of 57% over the past three years.
But perhaps the bigger story is what this evolution represents for South African consumers.

Healthcare cover does not have to be one-size-fits-all.

A young professional may need affordable access to everyday healthcare. A growing family may prioritise primary care and protection against unexpected medical costs. Someone living with greater health risks may need additional protection against serious illnesses. Employees may need benefits that provide reassurance without placing unsustainable pressure on household or employer budgets.

Different needs demand different solutions.
And that is where the 2027 NetcarePlus proposition seeks to create hope: by making healthcare protection more flexible, more accessible and more closely aligned with real-life medical needs.

“The future of healthcare funding is not about finding one solution for every South African,” Akaloo says.“It is about creating meaningful choice and building protection around different healthcare needs, life stages and budgets.”In a healthcare landscape where uncertainty can often feel overwhelming, that philosophy offers an important reminder: better healthcare protection is not only about paying for treatment when something goes wrong. It is about helping people face tomorrow with greater confidence, dignity and peace of mind.
