The Durban University of Technology (DUT) community is reeling after a student tragically jumped to his death earlier today at the institution’s Steve Biko Campus.

The incident, which unfolded in broad daylight, was witnessed and filmed by bystanders, some of whom initially mistook the act for a prank.

Disturbing footage of the student’s lifeless body has since circulated widely on social media, prompting calls for sensitivity and restraint.

University officials swiftly evacuated the area following the incident, though some students reportedly returned to the scene, seeking to view the aftermath first-hand.

In response, DUT issued a statement urging the public to respect the student’s family and refrain from sharing unverified or graphic content.

“We are aware of reports already circulating on social media regarding this tragedy and we humbly request that you remain respectful and not share unverified information,” the statement read.
Police have visited the scene and are expected to continue their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.

DUT’s Student Counselling Department has reiterated its commitment to supporting students in distress.

According to its online portal, the department provides “critical, high quality psycho-social emotional, academic and medical support services to students.”

As the university mourns this devastating loss, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for mental health awareness and support within academic institutions.
