Pikitup, the waste management entity of the City of Johannesburg, wishes to advise residents that waste collection services are currently disrupted in some areas serviced by the Marlboro and Randburg Depots due to ongoing protest action by casual workers.
Waste collection operations at Pikitup’s remaining depots are stable and continue according to schedule.
The ongoing protest action has significantly affected operations, particularly at the Marlboro Depot, where casual workers have prevented permanent employees from leaving the depot to undertake scheduled waste collection services. As a result, waste collection services in the affected areas may not be rendered as scheduled during the week commencing 27 July 2026.
Pikitup management continues to engage with the protesting casual workers in an effort to resolve the matter as swiftly as possible and restore normal operations.
The entity apologises to affected residents for the inconvenience caused and appeals for their patience and understanding while every effort is being made to minimise service disruptions.
Once operations have been restored, Pikitup will implement recovery plans to clear all outstanding waste collection backlogs in the affected areas as expeditiously as possible.
